South San Francisco Water Quality Control Plant
My sewage local facility is located 12 minutes east of my home along the bay in South San Francisco. The plant provides secondary waste water treatment for S. San Francisco in addition to two other San Mateo County cities, Colma and San Bruno. After their treatment process, they discharge treated water back into the conveniently-located bay. On an average day, about 9 million gallons of water run through the plant per day, introducing safe water back into the environment for multiple uses. During the wet season, up to 60 million gallons per day (MGD) flow through the plant.
Their treatment process consists of the following:
- Screening
- Grit removal
- Chemical addition to aid settling of solids
- Primary settling under vacuum
- Aeration
- Clarification
- Disinfection by chlorination
- Removal of excess chlorine prior to discharge
